Learning to Trust God
A gentle invitation to quiet anxiety and tend your soul
When Anxiety Creeps In, Where Do You Turn?
As the growing season gets underway in my part of the world, I am really enjoying time in my salsa garden.
The sun is warming the earth, the plants are starting to take off, green tomatoes are forming, and tiny peppers are stretching into deep green fruit.
Time in the garden always brings me back to how the Lord tends my soul with His Word. Just like I pull weeds and add water and fertilizer in the right season, God does the same with me—pulling out sin and refreshing me with His truth.
And so, I’m excited to be back with you, tending our souls through Scripture and asking the Master Gardener to cultivate good fruit in us.
Psalm 37: What to Do When You Feel Frustrated or Overwhelmed
Over the next few days, we’re using the TEND method to press the seed of God’s Word into our hearts through the opening verses of Psalm 37.
Let’s begin the way we always do:
Take time to pray.
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Would You open our hearts and minds to the truth of it today as we TEND through these verses? Amen.
Let’s Examine the Scripture
Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Psalm 37:1-3
“Fret Not”: A Command for the Anxious Heart
Right out of the gate, David says: don’t fret.
He’s honest about how easy it is to feel this way—to burn with anger, to compare, to feel stirred up by what others are doing.
The word “fret” here actually means to burn with anger. And yet, we’re told not to. Why?
Because those who do wrong will not last forever. They will fade. God’s “soon” may not match our timeline—but His promise still stands.
Trusting Yahweh: The God Who Never Changes
In verse 3, we see the name LORD in all caps—Yahweh. This is God’s personal, covenant name. The name He revealed to His people. It points to His self-sufficiency. His unchanging nature.
And what do we learn? He is trustworthy.
So when everything around us feels unstable… we are invited to trust the One who never changes.
Notice the Lessons
What God Tells You to Do Instead of Worry
God doesn’t just say “don’t fret.”
He gives us something better to do:
Trust in the Lord
Do good
Dwell in the land
Befriend (feed on) His faithfulness
Not just stop this… but come do this instead.
Dwell Where God Has You (Even If It’s Hard)
“Dwell in the land.”
Are we really abiding where God has placed us? Right here—in this job, calling, family, parenting season, marriage, community. Where is your land right now?
And what would it look like to fully show up there, to abide, to engage instead of resist?
What Are You Feeding Your Soul?
“Befriend faithfulness.” Or as some translations say: feed on His faithfulness.
Because it’s so easy to feed on everything else: social media, noisy culture, bad news, anxiety. But what if we intentionally fed ourselves on the faithfulness of God?
What if we named where we’ve seen Him at work this week? What if we sat with that, meditated on that, and let it nourish us?
Do what it says
A 5-Minute Reset for Your Soul Today
Don’t just read this and move on. Take a few moments—even now. Ask the Lord where you’ve been fretting. Where is He inviting you to trust Him instead?
Notice the “land” He has you in right now. Ask for grace to abide there and name one way He has been faithful to you this week. And then feed on that.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
If you’re longing to stay rooted in God’s Word and actually live this out—not just read it—I want to personally invite you into Tending Together.
It’s a space where we open God’s Word together, apply it to real life and encourage one another in every season. You don’t have to figure this out on your own.
We can tend our souls together. Find out more HERE.
